Traditional shading
Our Gyokuro is shaded with straw mats - a very elaborate method that is rarely used anymore. The shading is further increased over the course of the days by placing more and more straw on the roof. This ensures very natural shading and slight fluctuations in the shading of the individual tea leaves. Only very high-quality Gyokuros are produced in this way.
Hand-Picked & Kuradashi Aging
Masayuki San harvests the tea leaves for this high-quality Gyokuro green tea exclusively by hand and using a hand-operated machine. This allows him to hand-select the very best tea leaves, creating a harmonious, sweet, and completely bitter-free premium tea. In addition, he allows the tea leaves to mature for a short time under cool conditions. This process allows the Gyokuro to develop more aroma and body, while further reducing umami and bitter compounds.
Please, more than one cup!
This Gyokuro is of such high quality that the full aromatic range of the tea leaves unfolds, especially in subsequent infusions. While the first infusion has a very strong umami flavor, the second infusion is slightly sweeter while still retaining a distinct umami flavor. The third infusion is then noticeably lighter and fruitier, but still has umami. You can easily get up to 4–5 infusions.

This loose Gyokuro green tea has an intensely aromatic & sweet taste with a deep umami. The full-bodied taste when drinking is typical of very high-quality Gyokuro.

About 30 days before harvest, the gyokuro is completely shaded with straw mats. This allows it to develop an intense, full-bodied flavor and a pleasant sweetness. It is then left to mature in a cool place for several months. The green tea is grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers.

1 teaspoon per 100 ml / 55 degrees / 90 seconds
Especially with this Gyokuro, you should use soft water at a temperature of no more than 60°C. Otherwise, the delicate aroma and sweetness will be lost. The loose tea is brewed in a teapot with a strainer. Alternatively, you can use refillable disposable tea bags. It is a very sweet, strongly aromatic, and full-bodied, smooth green tea that appeals to both beginners and green tea connoisseurs. Our tutorial video below shows you how easy it is to prepare.
Additional Infusions
Gyokuro green tea is particularly well-suited for multiple infusions—at least 4–5 are possible. A steeping time of about 20 seconds is sufficient. This not only lets you enjoy the tea for longer but also allows more and more healthy compounds to be released from the leaves. Of course, you can also experiment with different temperatures and steeping times to find out what tastes best to you.
Cold Brew
Just like our senchas, gyokuro is particularly well-suited for cold brewing: simply pour cold water over the same amount of kabusecha and let it steep for 5–10 minutes. Then give it a gentle stir, let the tea leaves settle, and strain. Your delicious, refreshing drink is ready. Our tutorial video below shows you this simple and super refreshing brewing method.
Storage
The Gyokuro comes in a sealed, resealable aroma pouch. This makes it super easy to portion out, and the tea stays fresh for a long time.

Harumidori means “spring green” and is the name of the tea plant variety (cultivar) used for this top-grade Sencha green tea. Very high umami, intense sweetness, and a soft, mellow character are actually typical of shaded Gyokuro, yet the distinctive aroma of this Harumidori Sencha does not result from shading. The extremely rare cultivar, hand-picked by tea farmer Nobuyuki San, and a light aging process create the Gyokuro-like flavor along with a slightly sweet fruitiness. For anyone who loves the high umami and sweetness of Gyokuro but doesn’t want to sacrifice the freshness and fruitiness typical of Sencha, this tea is just right. Sencha Harumidori is a hand-picked Sencha green tea specialty with an incomparable character, aroma, and flavor.
