This premium green tea is produced by Akane San in Kagoshima, off the volcanic island of Sakurajima 🇯🇵; the tea leaves and the brew have a fruity passion fruit aroma. Thanks to the Okumidori cultivar, this Gyokuro has a very sweet and pleasantly mellow flavor with notes of pastries, almonds, and dried fruit. Compared to Gyokuro No. 1, it is significantly fruitier and has a milder umami flavor. Due to its unique combination of the umami typical of Gyokuro and its fruitiness, it is one of the best naturally grown Gyokuro teas we’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting.

Okumidori Cultivar

The Okumidori tea leaves provide an intense sweetness that cannot be achieved with “conventional” Yabukita tea leaves. Combined with the characteristic fruitiness of southern Japanese green teas, this results in a very smooth and full-bodied premium green tea.

Family-Owned Businesses in Southern Japan

Akane San and her family’s tea fields are located within direct sight of the active volcanic island of Sakurajima. This makes the soil particularly nutrient-rich. Combined with the clean spring water and the subtropical climate, this results in a particularly high-quality Gyokuro green tea.
